could not have been more impressed. and that saxy score (or, soundtrack? it seemed to be both, sort of), man, that’s one of the beautiful ones. was it Miles Davis, maybe? anyway, loved every single frame of this one. you know it already?
One of my favorites from that era, yeah. First time I saw it was on one of those old school videocassettes where all the foreign films had white subtitles, which was not the best for black and white films. I probably missed half of the dialogue. But then, Criterion picked it up eventually, made it all pretty. If you liked this one, there’s a whole slew of French crime films you might dig: Rififi, Le Cercle Rouge, Le Samouraï, etc. And that score: yep, Miles Davis. I can’t recall the story behind it, but I believe he improvised the whole thing.
Yeah, I have never seen the movie but love the soundtrack after stumbling across it on accident. As Jesse mentioned, Miles composed it live while watching the movie projected on a screen in front of him and just improvised along with the imagery. I don’t think he even let his band see the movie before they showed up to the recording session, so it was all an immediate reaction. However they did it, it worked.
What did you think of Elevator to the Gallows?
